Trichodynia is often called as burning scalp syndrome in which patient may feel pain, burning or itching of scalp. This condition is commonly seen in females and even studies have claimed that females are three times more prone to this syndrome.
What happen in trichodynia?
In this disorder generally nerves connecting to the nerve system of the brain send the signal of pain to brain so patient feels scalp pain. Even some studies have claimed that patients of this disorder have extremely sensitive nerves and it is close link to hair loss. Both the factors can trigger each other. Some patients also complaint about scalp itchiness during this syndrome.
Causes for trichodynia
This condition can give feeling of being pricked by needles to the patient. Moreover patient may feel itchiness and scalp pain. This syndrome can occur due to following reasons
- This condition can happen due to tightly tied hair which prevents the hair follicles to breathe so can lead to scalp contraction and hair loss.
- If the hair is not dried after shower then also hair follicles can get damage due to itching caused due to un-drained water in scalp.
- Even the dry and intense hair conditioner can trigger this syndrome as these may cause scalp irritation.
- People that are allergic to hair dye can also suffer from this condition of scalp pain.
- Deficiency of vitamin D can also result in weakening of hair follicles so chances for this syndrome get increase.
- Factors like stress, obsessive compulsive disorder and anxiety can also lead to this disorder as the studies have proved direct relation between them
- This condition can also happen in women due to side effects of contraceptive pills.
Symptoms of trichodynia
The most common symptoms of this disorder is feeling of being prickled with needles. Other than this patients may feel pain, itchiness and burning of scalp. After sometime patient may also have redness and wound on scalp. Hair loss or shedding of hair is also common symptom of this condition.
