It is seen that men mostly have excessive hair on their bodies and women, on the other hand, do not have so much hair. But, some women have plenty of hair all around their body.
Many women have a lot of hair where most men have it growing, for example, upper lip, chest, stomach, back, this condition is known as hirsutism. The hair in these women is very dark in color and also very hard, unlike the light, fine, hair, that many women have.
What are the Causes?
Mostly genes, hormones or medicines are to be blamed for this:
Medication:
Many drugs or medicines change the hormone levels in the system, especially in growing years. The reason for this is:
- Having drugs helping in endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition when tissue in uterus starts growing outside the womb.
- Drugs having hormones in them, for e.g. anabolic steroids.
- Drugs stimulating hair growth.
Hormones:
At many times, the hirsutism condition is interrelated to the high amount of male hormone (also called androgens). Every woman makes this, and low levels are not a cause of excessive hair growth. But, when the level reaches a very high amount, they can cause hirsutism and many other things, like small breasts, deep voice, acne (basically all that a man possesses).
High levels of male hormones and hirsutism. Are commonly seen in women having:
- Tumours
- Glands called adrenal
- Cushing’s syndrome
- This is found in those who have excessive amounts of the stress hormone known as cortisol.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome
- This causes small lumps or sacs filled with liquid, which grow on ovaries.
Genes:
Many times this is seen running from generation to generation. In case your mother or sister had it, it is very likely that you will also have it.
Treatment For Removing Excess Hair:
Therapy:
If you have excessive hair on your body than you should be having, then it is time that you think of ways of removing it.
Creams/Lotions:
Many creams and lotions that are seen in the market have chemicals called depilatories. Once you apply them, let it be on your skin for awhile, and once you wipe it off, the hair also removes.
Waxing:
A very quick way to get rid of unwanted hair by root is with wax which is melted. This can be best-done sitting in the comforts of the salon.
Shaving:
This is done by using a razor or electric shaver. You have to shave daily in order to avoid hard hair growing.
Tweezing or Threading:
The ways to pluck hair are many. Some like to do it with the aid of tweezers, or some like to hire people for threading- this can be done by using a long, tight string to curve around and then remove unwanted hair.
Body Hair Transplant:
Another way of getting rid of hair is through body hair transplant. In this method, the hair from unwanted areas is taken out from the roots.
Birth control pills
Birth control pills are effective in producing very less male hormones. Regularly having these, will help the body in producing less hair on the face or body.
Laser Hair Removal
The heat from lasers helps in taking out hair, but the process has to be repeated time and again. The treatment aims at root level hair.
