Vitiligo is a skin disorder that occurs due to abnormal skin pigmentation. The melanocytes cells in our skin develop melanin pigment that is responsible for the skin color. Large quantity of melanin pigments result into dark skin. Due to sickness, some melanocytes are affected or they lose their function-ability. The deficiency of melanin pigment results into whiteness of skin in the affected areas. Due to this, white spots develop in the various shapes in the affected areas.

Vitiligo is also called as leucoderma that occurs in the various body parts and is not only limited to the face.


    Vitiligo Types

    Vitiligo is classified into two types- Segmental vitiligo and Non-segmental vitiligo.

    Segmental Vitiligo- It is a non-symmetrical type disease that occurs in young people. Asymmetrical white patches on the affected skin areas are related with posterior root of spine nerve. Segmental Vitiligo actively multiplies if left without treatment.

    Non-segmental Vitiligo It is a symmetrical type of Vitiligo that means if white spot occurs on one eye, the same occurs on the second eye as well. The patches develop on arms, eyes, hands and elbows. This type of vitiligo slowly multiplies however its treatment is more complicated.


    Causes of Vitiligo

    1. Hereditary- People with family background of the same problem, have white spots.
    2. Autoimmune diseases- In case of abnormal immunity system in a patient, the immunity cells in their body damage the melanocytes cells. Lack of melanin results into the development of white patches.
    3. Nerve injury-Injury to derma tissue causes segmental vitiligo.
    4. Chemical abuse- Chemical allergy or side effects of specific chemicals also cause damage to melanocytes that result into abnormal skin pigmentation.


    The treatment method chosen is based on the affected body part, symptoms, causes and type of Vitiligo. Other essential factors considered are shape of patches and their growth speed. With the complete evaluation and diagnosis of your patches condition, our expert dermatologists choose an effective method for the treatment. Commonly used methods are:

    Phototherapy: It is a traditional treatment procedure for Vitiligo. Advanced therapy includes the use of UV rays to reduce the photo-toxic materials. The treatment length varies up to 15 months to see the complete protection. The procedure also includes the use of topical agents to offer the fast treatment.

    Psoralen: In addition of phototherapy, psoralen is applied half hour before the implementation of phototherapy on the treatment areas.

    Laser treatment-   The treatment with the use of laser offers the excellent results. An excimer laser offers the great repigmentation. This laser is very effective in offering the satisfactory results to more than 70% patients. It offers more significant results in Fitzparick skins.

    Medical course- The use of Corticosteroids certainly cures the irregular skin pigmentation if the treatment begins immediately. The medicines prescribed depend on the patient’s age. These medicines contain cortisone that stimulates the hormone production through adrenal glands. Patients can see the effective results within three months of medication.

    Melantocyte Transplant- It is an advanced treatment in surgical management procedure of Vitiligo. The large affected regions can be treated with this method and results are better than traditional procedures such as skin or punch grafts. By Transplantation, the melanocytes are removed from the healthy skin areas that are then transferred to the affected parts.


    Melanocyte Transplant as an effective Vitiligo Cure

    During the treatment, melanocytes and keratinocytes are removed from the unaffected body areas. Then a suspension including enzymes is transplanted to the target area. Through this procedure more than 95% of patients receive the excellent results. The treatment takes only a couple of hours. It is performed under local anesthesia; moreover patient can quickly turn back to home after the treatment.
